“Ties” is “links to” in a suit. It implies a relationship substantial enough to matter while refusing to say what the relationship is — and the strength of a tie (paid consultant? college roommate? one meeting?) is exactly the information that would let you judge it.

Real relationships get named: “a board member,” “his brother,” “a paid adviser.” “Ties to” is what you write when naming it would deflate the story.
