“Amid” is a mood ring. “Amid growing concerns,” “amid fears,” “amid scrutiny” — it paints a cloud of worry around a story without sourcing the worry or proving it’s relevant.
It’s also slippery on cause: “amid” implies a backdrop without asserting the event was caused by, or even connected to, the “concerns.” Whose concerns, how many, growing by what measure? The word is built not to say.
